Electromobility: a new challenge for the Artois metropolitan center

Ten years after the arrival of the Louvre-Lens, the PMA is launching a new challenge: that of successfully developing around the ACC factory and electromobility.

All about ACC

ACC, "Automotive Cells Company", is a joint venture created in September 2020 by the PSA and Total Groups and dedicated to the manufacture of batteries in Europe;

ACC plans to eventually develop 4 industrial sites:

  • an R&D center located in Bordeaux, operational since 2020
  • a pilot site in Nersac (Charente) to experiment with the conditions for industrial production, operational since 2021
  • two "GigaFactories" to produce batteries on an industrial scale: one on the Artois-Flandres Industrial Platform, managed by the SIZIAF in Douvrin (operational in 2023) and the other in Kaiserslautern in Germany (operational in 2025).

The Douvrin ACC plant should eventually occupy 30 ha of the SIZIAF Park without resorting to agricultural land.

VAC's objectives are:

  • to produce batteries for electric vehicles at the best technological level in terms of energy performance, range, charging time and carbon footprint
  • to develop production capacity to support the growth in demand for electric vehicles on the European market
  • to ensure the industrial independence of Europe both for the design and for the manufacture of batteries. The aim is to eventually equip 1 million electric vehicles per year, ie more than 10% of the European market.

The challenges for the PMA

The establishment of ACC on the territory is an opportunity, in terms ofjobs, of development economic andattractiveness.

The ambition of the Artois metropolitan center: to become "the territory of electric mobility". It is available both in the automotive sectors, their batteries, equipment, motorizations but also in other modes of transport where alternative motorizations to fossil fuels are developing.

This establishment can contribute to broadening access to electric mobility for the greatest number of people by reducing the cost of vehicles thanks to the mass production of batteries. However, it will have to be accompanied by an ambitious strategy for the development of charging points, even in the residential rental fabric of mining towns.

The production of electric batteries also raises the major question of raw materials necessary and in particular the dependence on the countries of origin where the extraction conditions are most often deplorable both from an environmental and social point of view.

Seize the opportunity to develop:

  1. a circular economy of these materials in order to reduce the level of imports as much as possible
  2. the reuse of these batteries, for a "second life" after their use in an automobile, for energy storage for example.

The establishment of ACC and its future logistical needs are also a lever for developing alternatives to road freight of goods, through the use of river and rail to which the territory of the PMA offers privileged access.

Recruitment is accelerating

While the work is in full swing, between now and the commissioning of the site in the summer of 2023, the team will grow as the project progresses.

Profiles of engineers and maintenance, methods and industrialization technicians, but also experts in safety, finance, fire safety, etc. are particularly sought after today to support the next steps that are looming.
